What is Plywood?
Plywood, an engineered wood, is manufactured from thin layers or "plies" of wood veneer glued together with adjacent layers. To form a composite material, plywoods are bound with resin and wood fiber sheets. Plywoods are used in various applications that require sheet material of high quality and high strength.
The benefits of the plywood grain alternation:
1) decreasing shrinkage and expansion, strengthening dimensional stability;
2) reducing the wood split trend when nailed at the edges;
3) making the panel strength consistent in all directions.
Plywood is often made from hardwoods, which is a good option for sturdy and attractive veneers. However, as we all know, to harvest hardwoods, such as oak and maple, it will take years, sometimes even a century, to grow them. It's time-consuming and not environmentally friendly.
Is there any fast-growing and eco-friendly plywood material that could replace hardwood? Yes, it will be the bamboo plywood.
About Bamboo Plywood
Bamboos are a diverse group of evergreen perennial flowering plants of the grass family. That is to say, bamboo is one type of grass. It is not a tree!
1. Bamboo Is Fast-growing
Bamboo could be considered to be one of the fastest-growing plants in the world.
For example, certain bamboo species could grow 910mm (36") within a 24-hour period, at a rate of almost 40mm (1+1⁄2") an hour. A growth about 1mm every 90 seconds or 1 inch every 40 minutes. It only takes one single growing season (about 3 to 4 months) for individual bamboo culms to emerge from the ground at full diameter and grow to their full height.
The rapid growth speed enables bamboo plantations to be readily harvested for a shorter period than tree plantations. For example, if you grow bamboo and hardwoods (like fir tree) at the same time, you could harvest the bamboo in 1-3 years, while it will take at least about 25 years (sometimes even longer) to harvest the fir tree.
2. Bamboo Is Eco-Friendly and Sustainable
The rapid growth and tolerance for marginal land make bamboo a good candidate for afforestation, carbon sequestration and climate change mitigation.
Unlike trees, bamboos could be planted in degraded lands thanks to its tolerance for marginal land. It contributes greatly to mitigating climate change and carbon sequestration. Bamboos could absorb between 100 and 400 tonnes of carbon per hectare.
All the above characteristics make bamboo a good choice for plywood than other hardwoods.
Question: Is bamboo plywood harder than hardwood?
You might wonder: since bamboo belongs to grass, not trees. Is bamboo plywood harder than hardwood like oak and maple?
Hardwood plywoods like oak and maple are commonly used for house construction. Therefore, people will take it for granted that hardwood plywood is certainly harder than bamboo plywood. However, on the contrary, bamboo plywood is actually much harder than hardwood plywood. For example, bamboo is 17% harder than maple and 30% harder than oak. On the other hand, bamboo plywood is also resistant to molds, termites and warping.
Question: Where could the bamboo plywood be used?
Bamboo is broadly used as a source material for construction, food and other manufactured goods. Therefore, bamboo plywood could be used to replace other regular plywood. Following its horizontal or vertical grain, bamboo plywood could be made for interior walls, countertops and furniture.
